Anatomy of Yoga

Anatomy of Yoga is a lavishly illustrated guide to the complex and multifaceted roles played by the muscles in yoga. In all yoga poses, muscles guide the bones, maintain the joints, protect the nerves, and suspend or lift parts of the body. To this end, they must be both strong and supple: able to relax, stretch, or combine multiple functions to coordinate their actions. A well-designed yoga practice can gradually develop these different qualities within the muscles.

Calais-Germain introduces the muscles involved in 37 classic yoga poses through ‘themed explanation sheets’ that show how the muscles are engaged in each pose. With helpful examples and over 500 color drawings, Anatomy of Yoga graphically depicts the dynamic interplay between muscles and poses, guiding the reader to a more enlightened and beneficial yoga practice.

About the Author

Blandine Calais-Germain is the celebrated author of Anatomy of Movement, Anatomy of Movement: Exercises, The Female Pelvis: Anatomy and Exercises, and Anatomy of Breathingamong other titles. Her lifelong involvement with dance, both as performer and teacher, led to an interest in other physical disciplines and to more formal study of the complex and integrated movements of the body. She studied physiotherapy at the French School of Orthopedics and Massage in Paris, and subsequently developed an innovative method for teaching the physical, structures of anatomy in relation to movement, which she teaches at workshops in France and to students around the world.
